A child's paternity is obviously important to the child and to the biological father. For the biological father proving that a child is his biological child impacts on his status as a natural guardian or right to be appinted guardian for that child, obligation to pay child support for that child, right to be consulted about issues impacting on that child's upbringing and right to ask the Court for a parenting order in respect of that child.
Sometimes paternity is in issue in estate proceedings and an inheritance can be at stake.
At Thomas Dewar Sziranyi Letts, we can help you with the process of proving or disproving the paternity of a child (i.e. whether or not a particular man is the biological father of a child). DNA testing is often an important step along the way but proceedings are often still necessary to either ensure DNA testing occurs or so that the a child's paternity is reflected in a sealed court order which may then be used for legal purposes.
